East Jerusalem must be the capital of a future Palestinian State!

“The transfer of 790 Palestinian businesses to Jewish settlers is a further step towards the annexation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem in particular. It is wholly in keeping with statements made by the Israeli President and Prime Minister and the view of the majority of the Israeli government that the Palestinian part of Jerusalem cannot be separated from the western part of the city. Israel‘s illegal annexation of East Jerusalem has never been acknowledged by the international community and remains one of the greatest challenges on the road to a two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine,” said Annette Groth, spokeswoman on human rights for the Left Party parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, in response to a report in the Jordanian newspaper al-Ghad.

Annette Groth continued:
“For decades, Israeli governments and authorities have attempted by any means possible to drive the local population out of East Jerusalem. Palestinians have their documents and thus their right to reside in the city revoked, others are held in administrative detention; Palestinians almost never receive building permits, while houses and extensions that have already been built are demolished. This strategy for making East Jerusalem “Palestinian-free” aims to locate an increasing number of Israeli settlers in the area and to take over the eastern part of the city as much as possible in the long term.”

The international community cannot merely observe these attempts without any major outcry. We cannot allow the Israeli government to continue to break international law with impunity. I call on the Federal Government to at last stop supplying Israel with arms and instead make a clear protest against the expropriation and suppression of Palestinians. Silence may benefit the Israeli government in the short term, however in the long term it is surely also in Israel’s interests to at some point live in peace with its neighbours. Helping to achieve this is what friends are supposed to do!”
